A board of county commissioners in North Carolina is asking the Supreme Court for help: Its members don’t believe they should have to forbid volunteers from mentioning the name of Jesus in prayers offered before their meetings.
But the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State are standing by their victory in a U.S. circuit court decision that states even “a solitary reference to Jesus Christ” in invocations before the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners’ meetings could do “violence to the pluralistic and inclusive values that are a defining feature of American public life.”
Furthermore, wrote Judge James Harvie Wilkinson III in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals majority opinion, legislative invocations offered in Jesus’ name are inherently “sectarian” and thus should be censored lest they make some attendees feel “uncomfortable, unwelcome and unwilling to participate in … public affairs.
This is not what our founding fathers wanting for us at all. We were to embrace our creator. We should not be censored into changing prayers for those chosen few who do not believe or want to pray. I say don't participate in the prayer than. We were founded on GOD principles and should not go to strike back at him. Are we now any better than those who put him to death. Stop the craziness and just let people pray. Put our pledge of allegiance back in schools. Get this country back on track.
I will remind you my fellow Americans Again we are under attack from within and you better wake up or the place you used to live will be no MORE!

Sales Tip: Always Be Closing (ABC). The one simple rule that will help increase your sales.
I don't know who came up with the phrase, "Always Be Closing" but it's brilliant. In sales circles it's known more simply as ABC.
If you are in sales, this simple catchy phrase will help keep you on track to making sales.
Here's some insight into sales and how to increase the number of sales YOU make.
Buyers like to get the sales person off track.
They like to ask questions, lots of questions.
They ask:
Does it come in blue?
What's the guarantee?
Buyers like to stall, hedge, avoid.
They say:
I have to ask my wife.
I want to look around.
I think I can get a better deal somewhere else.
Buyers like to know that their business matters, that they are getting some personal attention to earn their business.
But sales people, know the ABC's of sales - Always Be Closing.
Smart, successful sales people know that happy customers and good sales people go hand in hand.
They know that spending a little extra time with a serious buyer, or creating a personalized offer can be exactly what is needed to clinch a sale.
The buyer wants their questions answered so they can make the decision to buy. The smart salesperson wants to answer those questions and move the person ever closer to buying.
My colleague, Dr. Jeffrey Lant talks about the sales dance. He likens the sales process to a type of courtship. The sales person approaches, the buyer is shy, aloof. The sales person comes closer, offers the right words, and assurances. The buyer plays hard to get but shows interest. The sales person is more engaging, tries harder with a better offer, always moving toward the close.
ABC - Always be Closing means this:
Answering relevant questions, eliminating obstacles to the sale being made, helping with payment plans, reassuring the buyer, making special offers, sweetening the deal, whatever it takes to get the sale.
Closing the sale means finding out from the customer, what it will take to get them to buy NOW, not next week, or next month. The best sales people are listeners. They listen to what the buyer wants and they determine a way to get it for them so the sale is made, today. You can HEAR someone who wants to buy, if you stop talking long enough to listen.
ABC means doing your job right so the customer gets a great deal and you make a great sale!
Most of us have been on the receiving end of a poor sales person, and we also remember that warm happy feeling when you've made a purchase that you feel good about. We like to feel special, a good sales person can make that happen or alternatively with the wrong approach can make you walk away.
Happy customer's who feel they got a good deal can be a repeat customer or a customer for life. Unhappy customers help you learn what you could perhaps be doing better. The right approach with an unhappy customer can convert them into a happy one! In fact, they may end up being your best customer because they see you actually cared and tried to make better a problem situation.
Got a sticky note? Write ABC on a sticky note, and post it on your computer. It will help remind you when you are talking to a customer, or answering an email, or sending a quote, or posting an offer, remember to Always Be Closing.

Yelp.com is a reviews website that allows members to post reviews (good and bad) about different types of business. The site is structured into geographical areas which is beneficial for both users of the site and for businesses.

For the most part, review sites like Yelp.com are GOOD for local business. The exposure for a business, is tremendous and difficult to not be seen as valuable. You get free exposure by reviews being posted, new customers are introduced to what you offer, former customers are reminded that you are still there. You as the owner or manager get come control over content, by adding your own business, then commenting often, posting pictures etc. Social media allows businesses to engage with their customers in a positive way.
Yes, there are some possible disadvantages. People can write negative reviews about your business. But if you run a solid operation these will be overshadowed by the good comments that people post. Some businesses have been known to pay people to write good reviews or offer other perks. Statistical averages will most often work in your favour if you are an honest business, doing your best to provide a quality service for your customers. Remember, negative reviews can be responded to by the business owner, or manager. Customers understand that no business is perfect. False, or off-the-wall reviews stand out as such and are often filtered, removed or rated lower in terms of helpfulness. What matters to consumers is that a business owner makes an effort to resolve problems.

For the most part, review sites like Yelp.com are GOOD for local business. The exposure for a business, is tremendous and difficult to not be seen as valuable. You get free exposure by reviews being posted, new customers are introduced to what you offer, former customers are reminded that you are still there. You as the owner or manager get come control over content, by adding your own business, then commenting often, posting pictures etc. Social media allows businesses to engage with their customers in a positive way.
Yes, there are some possible disadvantages. People can write negative reviews about your business. But if you run a solid operation these will be overshadowed by the good comments that people post. Some businesses have been known to pay people to write good reviews or offer other perks. Statistical averages will most often work in your favour if you are an honest business, doing your best to provide a quality service for your customers. Remember, negative reviews can be responded to by the business owner, or manager. Customers understand that no business is perfect. False, or off-the-wall reviews stand out as such and are often filtered, removed or rated lower in terms of helpfulness. What matters to consumers is that a business owner makes an effort to resolve problems.

Author's program note. My mother used regularly to bring down the house when she'd say "When I was a cub scout (when Abe Lincoln was president)..." and then her usual sharp-as-a-tack observation on any subject under the sun. We'd all laugh and knew POM (Poor Old Mother) was chipper indeed, all being well.
So I can affirm that when she was a cub scout, when Honest Abe was president, every one of those scouts, as a matter of urgent priority, knew at least two words of Latin... "semper paratus," always ready.
And I am glad to tell you that our ship-shape lads and lassies of the United States Coast Guard know these words as well. Which is why this vital part of the nation's defenses uses them, enshrined as they are in a bouncy composition, as peppy and upbeat as America itself. It seems the lyrics were written first by Captain Francis Saltus Van Boskerck in 1922. The music was composed later, in 1927, on a "beat-up old piano" while his ship was stationed in Unalaska, Alaska, which is no doubt this burg's undying (and perhaps only) claim to fame.
But here the puzzles and conundra begin. Why did Homer Smith, that busy body, change the lyrics in 1943, jarring the spirit and eternal serenity of Captain Francis, only to have his words rewritten again in 1969? Perhaps "paratus" wasn't as "semper" as they thought.
And here, I must add yet another "semper", an admonition to all writers, artists and composers who value the calm and peace of their auditors and readers: please, I implore you, having finished your opus, record for inquiring humanity the facts about it, who wrote it, your birth (and sad to say death) date, the circumstances of its creation, etc. anything, in fact, which will impart to all eternity key facts about your inspired work. If you do this, you are sure to get -- and keep -- the undying credit you deserve. And isn't this, after all, what you want?
Before commencing this article, go to any search engine and play that rousing "Semper Paratus" march... sing along, too, with the lyrics that will help turn your blog into a great money machine, the cynosure of every discerning eye:
" 'Semper Paratus' is our guide, Our fame, our glory, too. To fight to save, or fight and die!"
The vital importance not merely of having a blog... but of having a growing archive of material you can use in your blog, re-use, and use yet again.
This article was inspired by an article I wrote August 22, 2011 on Moammar Khadafy, the collapse of his murderous regime, and my commentary on what this important event meant for Libya, its peoples, and the world. It was blogged just as the capital city of Tripoli was freed, for the first time in over 4 decades of barbarism. The article was timely, powerful, valid, prophetic. As such, it generated widespread interest and tens of thousands of reader comments and heartfelt reactions. It also provided a means for the people allowed to blog it to publish their ads along with this insightful article, just as any other publisher bringing this story to their readers... and making money simultaneously; the essential formula for successful blogging.
For these traditional publishers their article on the fall of Tripoli and the regime of repression and death, was run once and once only... but for the blog publishers running this article, these wise folks acquired not merely an article... but a tool they could use for weeks, months and even years to come... with only the need to write a new, timely preface and their own observations matured as events progressed and developed.
Your first task is to stop thinking of yourself as a traditional periodical publisher and think instead of yourself as an innovative blog publisher, supremely knowledgeable and clever about, first, writing and publishing, and, then, updating and re-using every single word you write.
Here then are the crucial steps you must take to take advantage -- remember, for months and years ahead -- of your golden words.
1) Write regularly. Personally, I write at least 18-20 new blog articles each and every month. Each article is approximately 1,500 words in length and fits into one of the over 25 subject categories in which I write blog commentary. These subjects range from American politics, to literature, music, world history and events, appreciations for the lives and achievements of famous people... and people you have never heard of... and many more. The more topics you write on, the more people will be glad to receive your blog... and read and respond to the ads which you simultaneously send. And, remember, sending these ads... and reaping the rewards that accrue as a result... is a prime reason for publishing your blog in the first place.
2) Develop a file of headlines and prefaces to accompany each (re-used) article. Use language like this:

We received thousands of responses from this article. Here it is again... read it and please respond at once.
New developments on (subject). That's why you'll want to read this and respond at once.
Get the picture?
You need to open a file and regularly add verbiage designed to motivate, excite, and enthuse your readers... and you must always be alert to motivating configurations of language... and, of course, adding them to this file at once... never trusting to frail and fallible human memory.
3) Now pay attention to the world and its events by following the well-known all news channels and, of course, online sources. Your job is to be aware of what's happening... then pull articles on the same or related topics from your archive, update, then blog them.. along with your ad copy... as fast as you can. One of my esteemed and smart colleagues, Alan Schmitt of San Diego, California is a whiz at this.
He was watching CNN when the news broke about the death of dictator Khadafy. He went to my blog at jeffreylantarticles.com as he was authorized and entitled to do... and within 5 minutes had pulled the article, read it, made his comments and blogged it... to gratifying and profitable results. He just informed me that he did the same thing today using an important article on the New Hampshire primary I wrote some months ago, as part of my series on American politics. Again, simply by adding a few words, he squeezed more gold and benefit from this timely article. Bravissimo!
Now get started! Because now you are indeed "semper paratus"... ready to jump on and profit from a constantly growing number of articles which can easily be updated... and so turned, time and again, to money in your pocket. For in the words of that perky march, today's occasional music, "We're always ready for the call."
" High shall our purpose be, 'Semper Paratus' is our guide."... along, you may be sure, with the acute guidelines and recommendations of this article, too!

Your first task is to stop thinking of yourself as a traditional periodical publisher and think instead of yourself as an innovative blog publisher, supremely knowledgeable and clever about, first, writing and publishing, and, then, updating and re-using every single word you write.
Here then are the crucial steps you must take to take advantage -- remember, for months and years ahead -- of your golden words.
1) Write regularly. Personally, I write at least 18-20 new blog articles each and every month. Each article is approximately 1,500 words in length and fits into one of the over 25 subject categories in which I write blog commentary. These subjects range from American politics, to literature, music, world history and events, appreciations for the lives and achievements of famous people... and people you have never heard of... and many more. The more topics you write on, the more people will be glad to receive your blog... and read and respond to the ads which you simultaneously send. And, remember, sending these ads... and reaping the rewards that accrue as a result... is a prime reason for publishing your blog in the first place.
2) Develop a file of headlines and prefaces to accompany each (re-used) article. Use language like this:

We received thousands of responses from this article. Here it is again... read it and please respond at once.
New developments on (subject). That's why you'll want to read this and respond at once.
Get the picture?
You need to open a file and regularly add verbiage designed to motivate, excite, and enthuse your readers... and you must always be alert to motivating configurations of language... and, of course, adding them to this file at once... never trusting to frail and fallible human memory.
3) Now pay attention to the world and its events by following the well-known all news channels and, of course, online sources. Your job is to be aware of what's happening... then pull articles on the same or related topics from your archive, update, then blog them.. along with your ad copy... as fast as you can. One of my esteemed and smart colleagues, Alan Schmitt of San Diego, California is a whiz at this.
He was watching CNN when the news broke about the death of dictator Khadafy. He went to my blog at jeffreylantarticles.com as he was authorized and entitled to do... and within 5 minutes had pulled the article, read it, made his comments and blogged it... to gratifying and profitable results. He just informed me that he did the same thing today using an important article on the New Hampshire primary I wrote some months ago, as part of my series on American politics. Again, simply by adding a few words, he squeezed more gold and benefit from this timely article. Bravissimo!
Now get started! Because now you are indeed "semper paratus"... ready to jump on and profit from a constantly growing number of articles which can easily be updated... and so turned, time and again, to money in your pocket. For in the words of that perky march, today's occasional music, "We're always ready for the call."
" High shall our purpose be, 'Semper Paratus' is our guide."... along, you may be sure, with the acute guidelines and recommendations of this article, too!

Did you check your Spam Folder?
While watching a recent episode of The Office, I couldn't help but laugh out loud. During a meeting, the character Andy says to his co-workers, "Ok, I have emailed you all the critical data so be sure to check your spam folder."
Oh, if only I had a dime for everytime, we said to someone in our office, or to a customer, "Did you check your spam folder?"
It's so much of an accepted problem now, companies anticipate that the information a customer requests may be filtered to spam. So in response, websites, sales material, new customer information and often telephone staff are briefed to include information on how to whiltelist, or mark email as acceptable.
For the most part we love our email don't we? We rely on it to communicate with customers, family members, co-workers and conduct business. Email is better than voice mail, you can send it when convenient for you, from anywhere in the world. But will the person you are sending it to actually get it?
Maybe.
If you don't know that someone sent you something, how will you know that you didn't get it?
Despite the best efforts and money invested by ISP's and Mail Service providers, the spam still gets through. You can't find that important email from your customer, and you swear you never got the flight confirmation for your next trip. You check your email, then check again. Still nothing, but the "enhancement" emails still get through. Amazing!
It seems the spammers have won the war on junk email. Yes, some serial spammers have been caught, but take one look in your junk or spam email box and it's busting with all kinds of offers and tidbits, malware, phishing schemes, and more. The simple task of opening an email attachment can unleash hell on your computer, harvest it and turn it into a Bot. Almost makes you want to watch The Terminator movie again. What was that Sarah Connor said about Skynet and self-aware computers taking over the human race?
I guess a positive way to look at it is this. The spammers, and the baddies of the Internet are helping to create jobs. As they release viruses and malware through email that infect computers it increases sales of Virus Protection Software, and increases calls to the Geek Squad at your local computer shop. The spammers keep the Internet police occupied and are contributing to economic recovery.
Most of us know to check our spam folder when an expected emailed does not arrive. Sometimes Email providers like Google's Gmail, make it a little difficult to check for misdirected email. For some reason, Gmail, (which otherwise is a great program) has hidden the Spam folder under the MORE tab. Rather than having a very obvious folder called Spam that users can see clearly then check, instead users have to click on MORE, than on the Spam sub-folder. Only then can users see what legitimate email has been filtered unnecessarily. Some ISP's block the spam before it even gets to your email box. This cuts down on spam but also means you may not get email that you actually DO want to receive, but your provider has deemed it not worthy for delivery or has blacklisted a domain.
Yes, spam is a fact if life. Just like we hate junk faxes, and telemarketers, and flyers in our mail boxes, we now we find our email boxes crammed with junk.
For most of us in an office environment we have come to accept junk email, as annoying but a part of life. The delete button is always a click away. It's just not worth getting upset about.

Author's program note. Today you will turn on the water tap in your home or office over and over again; just how many times you will not bother to consider. The water is there... it is easily accessible... you can have as much as you want as often as you want.
But this most assuredly is not the case for Barbara Buegeler, her husband David, and their arid acres in West Texas. Water, for them, is a constant concern; one they ponder about during the day and which they dream about, still pondering, at night. This is their story... a story of fortitude, commitment, and, yes, of a love that binds them to the land that defines them. It is a story every worker on the land will know and which every urban dweller, folks like me, should know... but do not... and so I write today as much for myself as for you.
For the incidental music for today's article, I have selected Dimitri Tiomkin's soaring score from the 1956 film classic "Giant." Go to any search engine and listen... but remember this: the music you listen to accompanies a work of fiction. What follows here is a work of fact.
A statistic that defines all.
A West Texas ranch like Barbara Buegeler's, where cattle are raised mostly for breeding, just a few for meat, needs at least 20 inches of rain each year. When these rains come, each drop a benediction to the earth and its momentary proprietors, all is well. People like Barbara, though they wouldn't like their neighbors to know, greet the rain when it comes as congregants in God's own cathedral. The water falls from on high and, before touching the good earth, enabling everything that follows, they are happily drenched and grateful. Water is everything here... and they greet it accordingly, with pure joy -- and relief -- in their hearts. Only those who have ever been without can so exult and the prayers that come involuntarily are not just words... but profound gratitude. These are the people of the land... and they know what is important.
These are now the people of drought and this is a story of resolution, faith, of fear and apprehension... but most of all, of abiding commitment. Meet Barbara Buegeler and her husband, both 67 years old.
The Buegelers have for over 30 years ranched west of San Saba (dubbed "Pecan Capital of the World"), at the edge of Hill Country, just where West Texas begins. It is a place that, for them, transcends mere beauty. It is "something of a heaven on earth," they say and which their decades of commitment confirm. It is a place where they wake up early to greet the dawn, grateful for the decision they made so long ago in their human lives, but just the shortest instant in the life of the land they own in law.... but whose acres in fact own them; again a fact which every land dweller knows and no urban dweller near or far away ever really comprehends.
These acres, always waiting for the rain, bring forth fruit in plenty and the pecans for which this place is famous. Here there have been good years... even great years... but since the summer of 2010 there has been drought, day after day when the rains have not come, just a few tantalizing drops. Local folks scan the skies, looking for portents in the clouds and hot breezes and have turned inward as they wait for what they and the land must have.
The rain stopped and the searing winds commenced.
Prosperity in West Texas is the result of a formula, conceived by Nature, known to all the people of the land. There must be just so much water, just so much sunshine, and the land must supply just the right cocktail of essential nutrients. Changes are neither desirable nor welcome, for changes spell problems and problems, over a particular period of time, spell catastrophe for the land and all its inhabitants, man and beast.
Beginning in mid-May 2011 the great heat began. No one thought much of it at the time; great heat is a regular feature of this land.... but as this heat continued day by day, inhabitants knew that this was the heat they fear and respect... for this is the heat that brings drought and all its well-known miseries. These predictable miseries marched smartly in as the daily temperatures rose, as high as 118 degrees, never lower than an even 100. And what the sun delivered by day, it left a hefty residue by night, when the land and every inhabitant still perspired... and knew the relief would come, had to come, but when?
Water tanks never dry before, dry now. And still no relief in sight...
How bad is it? So bad that three ponds which were never bone dry in these 30 years are now completely dry, no drop to be seen, even by accident. And this meant, for the first time, too, the need to haul water from the fire station in the town of San Saba, lest the drought on the land carry off its parched inhabitants. For lack of water the land and everything on it dies, no matter how inured to drought they may be... and this reality is known to all.
Hauling water.
Anyone who has ever carried liquids home from the grocery store, knows only too well the heft of water and how difficult it is to move. Imagine, then, the need to haul every drop needed by plants, animals and humans... and to know that to stop means death and desolation. Thus, no one thinks twice about the task; it is necessary, and so must be done.
In San Saba each tank is filled to its 525 gallon capacity. Two such tanks are carried on a gooseneck trailer; another truck, this one driven by Barbara, hauls 325 gallons more. To maintain life (and hope) the Buegelers must make three trips a day (each trip 1 1/2 hours) three times a week. In each trip they haul 1,375 gallons. Home, the water moves by gravity flow and pump to fill the storage tanks, a time-consuming, laborious and absolutely essential process which cannot be missed, skipped, forgotten or complained of. It is all an inescapable process on which the land depends.
And as it is with water, so it is with everything else, too.
The animals, bereft of grass, must have all food and water promptly delivered by their human servitors... or they will perish under the blazing sun. Hay is non-existent and must be delivered... at prices that rise with the temperature. Many bales are needed each week; the prices now $110-175 for each, a worrying rise of up to $50 per bale. But this, too, is necessary, life in its delivery; death without.
And there is worse, far worse, to report.
Good neighbors and friends of so many years now broke; selling what little is left, dreams gone, now of the land no more. Towns you never heard of like Goldthwaite dried up, no water there at all. Eighteen hour days are now the norm as thirty years of work come down to the back breaking reality of food and water, unrelenting labor. And around them wildfires start and surge amidst the dry trees and foliage and worse expected, as Winter is prime season for these fires which jump and play -- and destroy.
Then just the other day a thing so small to the rest of us, so crucial to the Buegelers and their neighbors... some rain, 6 inches, not enough, but God's pledge there would be succor and better times. And so Barbara and David, made thus more hopeful, went out to feed the 22 baby calves and their mothers. And thought that despite all, theirs was still a paradise, the right place to find serenity and even the God who did not forget them after all.

Author's program note. If celebrated biographer David McCullough didn't write so well, this article might not have been written. But McCullough is a masterful writer... and his book on President Truman compelling reading for anyone who wants to understand contemporary America and its place in the world. Thus, I saw on this second reading, a date I had overlooked before and which this time was glaring: That is February 27,1947, and it is vital for my story today; it being the day my distant cousin General of the Army George C. Marshall became Secretary of State of these United States and went forward to do battle with the dark forces of Communist Russia and its murderous leader Joseph Stalin.
I had been waiting impatiently for General Marshall (no one including the President ever called him anything else and when President Roosevelt had tried, he was well and truly snubbed), waiting, I say, since I was born on Sunday, February 16, 1947 at 10.15 p.m. Central time. I was an American boy conceived in liberty and ready for the orders of the man appointed to save civilization. I knew he'd need all the help he could get... the battle crucial, the outcome in doubt, Americans not yet recognizing the danger or the stakes... and, having just returned from war, they wanted the benefits of the peace they had so newly won and which they were about to learn was now at the mercy of the greatest tyrant history had ever produced and his determination to rule everything and dictate to all. I was to be a participant in this war... we all were... although no one knew it yet.
First Wedding Anniversary
Even today when my 87-year old father discusses the events of February 16, 1947 there is a note of exhaustion in his voice. And this cannot be wondered at since this sleepy Sunday of post-war America had been sharply interrupted at 6 a.m. by a baby ready to be born... and no nonsense about it. Its young parents, my father just 22, my mother 23, got into what my father remembers as a ramshackle Ford, battered but dependable, and headed from Maywood, Illinois to Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park across the railway tracks. Whether I was born on the right or wrong side of those tracks I cannot say, but I know that from birth I had a way of centering the discussion and keeping things focused, as this day proved.
It was my parent's first wedding anniversary... and no doubt along the way some mention of this was made... but cards, presents, kisses and congratulations... all must wait for a better time. Not least because there was a nervous young mother to help in her task. And this was difficult. She went into the labor room of the hospital; my father was directed by Dr. Morrison to the maternity waiting room... but my mother's nervousness made the birth difficult. And so from early morning until late at night, my exhausted mother was wheeled into -- and out of -- the labor room... the baby ready to be delivered... my mother not yet ready to do so.
And so the day passed, very slowly indeed.
In the waiting room anxious fathers, puffing one cigarette after another, passed the time. One of these fathers, John Kafka, fell into conversation with my father, glad to pass the time so, as expectant fathers will do. My father and Khafka hit it off. My father was not happy with his current job and Khafka offered him one better; at National Malleable, a foundry which made castings for cars on America's all-important railroads. And so on this red-letter day, my father, Donald Marshall Lant, passed his first anniversary by getting a son and a job he kept for seven years. As for the baby, my father recalls he was red-faced, waving his hands and feet for attention. He said he looked "feisty and determined." Some things never change.
General Marshall was determined, too...
The minute peace came in the Pacific war with Japan (August 15, 1945), the worldwide situation completely shifted and with astonishing speed. No longer was the U.S.S.R. our ally. The Nazis conquered, Russia became our greatest nemesis, far greater than Germany had ever been. While America's military might unravelled as servicemen demanded to go home and at once, Stalin, the murderous weapons of the dictatorship his to command, kept a million men and more under arms, to be directed when and how he commanded. And so, he directed the fall and absorption of every Eastern European nation... and was determined to get more, starting with Turkey and Greece, then casting an eye at Italy and even France.
China, too, was about to fall as none knew better than a frustrated, aggravated Marshall who had attempted to sort out the situation there before becoming Secretary of State. He had failed... and came to Washington with a growing understanding that Stalin, an ally just the other day, meant to destroy an America which, as yet, had no understanding of this matter. Marshall's opinion strengthened and his world view darkened after flyiing to Stalin and attempting to broker a deal for post war peace. Stalin instead wanted chaos in Europe and Asia, the better to control and dictate. He didn't need peace... and it took the "striped pants boys" (as Truman called them) in Washington too long to figure out that Communists only negotiate when they cannot dictate... but that dictating is what they like best. Marshall was among the first to know what the Communists intended... and what it would mean for boys like me in the years ahead.
And so he, with the ardent backing of President Truman, whose support for General Marshall was unwavering, went to work on a plan which had nothing less than the clear objective of saving civilization and containing the spread of Communism. President Truman outlined his vision in an address to a joint session of Congress, March 12, 1947, less than a month after I was born. It lasted just 18 minutes and changed the world; Truman announcing that he intended to save Turkey and Greece; to draw the line at further Communist expansion. He let it be known the very soul of the world was at stake. And so it was...
I was less than a month old and was no doubt sleeping peacefully that day because of what came to be called the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan which followed, providing the details -- and the money -- that would make the President's strong and uplifting words a reality... so much so that I have slept soundly from that day to this. In due course, June 5, 1947, General Marshall traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to accept an honorary degree and to give the most important and historic commencement speech in all Harvard's 375 years. How well I can picture the scene, which took place right across the street from where I am writing today. It was charged with pageantry and over shadowed by deep concern and apprehension. General Marshall was not a gifted speaker, but he had formidable presence, an immense sense of occasion.... and his subject commanded total attention.
Marshall, looking beyond the assembled guests and worthies, spoke to the great American public, advising them that it was "virtually impossible by merely reading articles or looking at photographs to grasp the real conditions in Europe -- 'and yet the whole world's future hangs on proper judgement, hangs on the realization by the American people of what can best be done, or what must be done'."
22 years later I arrived at Harvard as a student myself. I wonder if that would have been possible, even conceivable had General Marshall and the President who so supported him failed. But they did not fail and as a beneficiary of all they did, I take this opportunity to recall their achievements and what they did for that feisty child born February 16, 1947, whose life was secured by a distant cousin he never knew, always grateful. This was America at our best... an America of leaders who saw far, told the truth, and worked diligently for the people, finding solutions, without fear of retribution or criticism.... who truly believed in and worked for the good of all. Where is General Marshall and his like today, when we need him so? For them all, then, "Taps", which you can find in any search engine:

Author's program note. If celebrated biographer David McCullough didn't write so well, this article might not have been written. But McCullough is a masterful writer... and his book on President Truman compelling reading for anyone who wants to understand contemporary America and its place in the world. Thus, I saw on this second reading, a date I had overlooked before and which this time was glaring: That is February 27,1947, and it is vital for my story today; it being the day my distant cousin General of the Army George C. Marshall became Secretary of State of these United States and went forward to do battle with the dark forces of Communist Russia and its murderous leader Joseph Stalin.
I had been waiting impatiently for General Marshall (no one including the President ever called him anything else and when President Roosevelt had tried, he was well and truly snubbed), waiting, I say, since I was born on Sunday, February 16, 1947 at 10.15 p.m. Central time. I was an American boy conceived in liberty and ready for the orders of the man appointed to save civilization. I knew he'd need all the help he could get... the battle crucial, the outcome in doubt, Americans not yet recognizing the danger or the stakes... and, having just returned from war, they wanted the benefits of the peace they had so newly won and which they were about to learn was now at the mercy of the greatest tyrant history had ever produced and his determination to rule everything and dictate to all. It's the day from hell in your office... how to deal with it to keep sanity and reap profits.

Author's program note. You knew it was going to be one of those days when, upon waking late, you stepped on the cat's tail... to be promptly punished by the feline drawing blood with her oh-so-sharp claws. And this was just the beginning...
We all have such days... and we all need to know what to do about them to avoid worsening an already trying situation and bounce back, flags flying, good humor intact and only the barest number of welts and bruises.
For such a day, Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) and his lighter-than-air style was born. In 1858, the world was gladdened (and scandalized) by what was said to be the first classical full-length operetta, "Orpheus in the Underworld". It contained what soon became one of the most celebrated pieces of music ever composed: "The Infernal Galop" which we all better know (and erroneously) as the "Can-Can", where a lady's bottom took Offenbach to the top.
This music, which can be found in any search engine, strikes just the right note for your chaotic day. "Orpheus in the Underworld" helps you get out of Hades, back to life at the top of your game.
Take a deep breath.
Could the day get any worse? Of course... and on days like this... it will.
You can scald yourself in the shower. Get trapped in rush hour traffic. Spill hot coffee on yourself.
All this sound familiar? It's just the beginning.
Your boss is in one of his "moods." The sales figures are bad. Your best customer just quit. And they don't have your favorite dough-nut at the commissary.
Yes, it's one of those days, and your job is to get control of it... before it gets any worse.
Take a deep breath. You've probably confronted a ton of messes in your life. This one is just a little more intense and demanding. Start with the sure-to-ground- you deep breath.
Then sit down at your desk, and jot a quick to-do list of what you need to do, when you're going to do it, and how you're going to do it. This is how to begin reestablishing the control that you must have, the control so necessary to efficiency and enabling you to do what's necessary, instead of being at the mercy of events. Remember at all times: there is only one of you... and so you must prioritize what is important... and what (the dough-nut) can wait and so can any other personal matters. Matters involving your job come first.
Get your boss off your back.
To buy yourself some time, deal with your boss first. Even if he's being demanding and difficult (so what else is new?)... he is the boss... and if you get him off your back, you'll buy yourself some of the time you really need to reassert control and move ahead. Take notes on what the boss says. Then ask him for his priorities about what should be done. Don't assume. Ask the boss to tell you what he wants, how important it is, and its priority in today's scheme of things. End with "aye, aye, Captain". Then go back and mesh what the boss said...with your own priorities. Your job is to know what the important things are... then get down to doing them.
Saving the lost customer.
One thing that can always knock you for a loop is losing a big account. This, for sure, is a matter for immediate, concentrated attention. But before you make this call, think. You may get only one chance to turn things around. You must be sure you 1) understand the customer's complaint and reason for canceling and 2) be prepared to address these points in deft detail. You must be as clear as you can be with why this key customer is quitting. What has she said before that'll give you a clue? People usually don't cancel without warning; there are omens. What were they? And what have you done and can you do to answer these concerns and make things better? Remember, the goal is keeping this person happy and the account where it belongs: with you. And this is going to take thought and constructive action.
Once you're ready -- but not until -- place the call. Remember if you turn this around, you'll get the positive momentum you need to turn the entire day around.... you'll be a hero; this is, after all, a Big Deal. So, place the crucial call... no pressure!
If the customer is determined to cancel, she probably won't take the call. This may mean she's determined to burn the bridge. Bad sign. This may also mean that she's brought her concerns to you in the past (however gently) and that you failed to act on them. Now these chickens are coming home to roost. Be prepared to eat crow... and a lot of it. Remember, this is business... and your job is to get that account back, whatever it takes.
Call again in 30 minutes, taking care of other matters from your to-do list in the meantime. Remember, your job today is to be super efficient and shake off the woes by checking off completed items from your list, even small things. Everything counts toward regaining efficiency, control, and as much serenity as you can muster.
Now try that all-important customer again. Unless this customer has made an irrevocable decision about not doing further business, this time you should connect. Remember, you are here to fix a problem; to get the customer to change her mind again and, with a very good deal from you, a better deal than she has now, return to the fold.
What, offer a better deal? Yes... you want this contract. You may very well have to renegotiate the terms to keep it. At least you should be prepared...
Now that you've got the customer on the line, your job is, first, to listen carefully to what she says. So, lean back... hear and evaluate what the customer has to say. Don't rush this call. You are lucky to have it and lucky to have this chance to save your bacon.
Now, when it's your turn to talk be prepared for the following:
* If you've made promises in the past, say so. Don't defend a position that's indefensible.
* If you can truly do what the customer needs, say so. You must make your strongest possible case now; you may never get another chance.
* Remind the customer just how long you've been part of her team and that you're willing to do, adamant to do, what will help her. Then bring on the extra goodies you've got to keep their business.
Sincerity, clarity, honesty, and, yes, enthusiasm are all part of the what you need. You are aiming for one of two outcomes. First, if the customer still won't budge, ask for at least the courtesy of a day or two for her to reconsider. This is better than affirmation of the account's cancellation.
Better, of course, is the customer's willingness to try again... thereby not only giving you the time you need to turn things around... not only with this customer specifically but with your day-from-Hades generally.
You're smart, you're following these recommendations... I feel confident, therefore, that you're going to re-establish beneficial relations with that key customer who just moments ago was ready to write you off. But not now.
Therefore, you need Jacques Offenbach again... and his celebrated "Infernal Galop," for with what you've read here... and with the essential dollop of galop... I feel sure you "Can-Can" do anything on what may prove to be your best day ever.
And, by the way, your favorite doughnut has just come into the commissary. Take two, you've earned them!

Author's program note. You knew it was going to be one of those days when, upon waking late, you stepped on the cat's tail... to be promptly punished by the feline drawing blood with her oh-so-sharp claws. And this was just the beginning...
We all have such days... and we all need to know what to do about them to avoid worsening an already trying situation and bounce back, flags flying, good humor intact and only the barest number of welts and bruises.
For such a day, Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) and his lighter-than-air style was born. In 1858, the world was gladdened (and scandalized) by what was said to be the first classical full-length operetta, "Orpheus in the Underworld". It contained what soon became one of the most celebrated pieces of music ever composed: "The Infernal Galop" which we all better know (and erroneously) as the "Can-Can", where a lady's bottom took Offenbach to the top.
This music, which can be found in any search engine, strikes just the right note for your chaotic day. "Orpheus in the Underworld" helps you get out of Hades, back to life at the top of your game.
Take a deep breath.
Could the day get any worse? Of course... and on days like this... it will.
You can scald yourself in the shower. Get trapped in rush hour traffic. Spill hot coffee on yourself.
All this sound familiar? It's just the beginning.
Your boss is in one of his "moods." The sales figures are bad. Your best customer just quit. And they don't have your favorite dough-nut at the commissary.
Yes, it's one of those days, and your job is to get control of it... before it gets any worse.
Take a deep breath. You've probably confronted a ton of messes in your life. This one is just a little more intense and demanding. Start with the sure-to-ground- you deep breath.
Then sit down at your desk, and jot a quick to-do list of what you need to do, when you're going to do it, and how you're going to do it. This is how to begin reestablishing the control that you must have, the control so necessary to efficiency and enabling you to do what's necessary, instead of being at the mercy of events. Remember at all times: there is only one of you... and so you must prioritize what is important... and what (the dough-nut) can wait and so can any other personal matters. Matters involving your job come first.
Get your boss off your back.
To buy yourself some time, deal with your boss first. Even if he's being demanding and difficult (so what else is new?)... he is the boss... and if you get him off your back, you'll buy yourself some of the time you really need to reassert control and move ahead. Take notes on what the boss says. Then ask him for his priorities about what should be done. Don't assume. Ask the boss to tell you what he wants, how important it is, and its priority in today's scheme of things. End with "aye, aye, Captain". Then go back and mesh what the boss said...with your own priorities. Your job is to know what the important things are... then get down to doing them.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
How do you build an online business? Copy. Paste. Promote. Repeat.
I really hate using the first expression because I LOVE elephants but to make a point sometimes you have to be blunt.
This blog is meant to be direct and maybe make you a little irritated so you will REACT. A reaction is better than nothing. Hopefully that irritation leads to a reaction which leads to an action.
Forgive me if the tone of this blog sounds a bit tongue in cheek. My purpose is to try and get you to simplify tasks so you can get the results you want. I'd like you to think about things from a different perspective.
Every day I talk to people all over the world who are trying to build their online business. Some are having no success, some are having mixed success, some are just getting started, some have been working an online business for years. The ones who are hugely successful, I never hear from - hmmm strange.
What's the difference between the successful and the non-successful? Well it depends on who you ask and your definition of success. Here's my take on it.
People who are successful are DOERS!
They don't over think, they plod in and get busy.
They make mistakes, they learn, they try again.
They fall down, they get up again as often as it takes to get the job done. They simplify; they don't overcomplicate.
They have a unique way of looking at things, and attacking a task.
They FOCUS on what needs to be done, eliminate distraction.
They understand that small tasks can lead to big results.
They find what works and stick to it.
They have a patience many of us just can't fathom.
Failure is not an option.
I had the honour of playing a round of golf with a Professional Golfer last week. This guy was good and had won numerous tournaments. I asked him how he got to be such a good golfer and this is what he told me. He said, "I've played golf since I was 4. I'm 24 now. I've played golf pretty much every day my entire life." I then said to him, "so you did the same thing everyday and got really good at it?" He looked at me for a moment to make sure that I was being serious about something so obvious then he said. "Yes, I got some lessons and instructions then practised every day and here I am."
So if I can draw from that, if you want to be good at something - successful at something - do it everyday - over and over and over again!
Could it be that simple?
Building your online business is as simple as Copy. Paste. Promote. Repeat. Everyday?

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
How do you build an online business? Copy. Paste. Promote. Repeat.
I really hate using the first expression because I LOVE elephants but to make a point sometimes you have to be blunt.
This blog is meant to be direct and maybe make you a little irritated so you will REACT. A reaction is better than nothing. Hopefully that irritation leads to a reaction which leads to an action.
Forgive me if the tone of this blog sounds a bit tongue in cheek. My purpose is to try and get you to simplify tasks so you can get the results you want. I'd like you to think about things from a different perspective.
Every day I talk to people all over the world who are trying to build their online business. Some are having no success, some are having mixed success, some are just getting started, some have been working an online business for years. The ones who are hugely successful, I never hear from - hmmm strange.
What's the difference between the successful and the non-successful? Well it depends on who you ask and your definition of success. Here's my take on it.
People who are successful are DOERS!
They don't over think, they plod in and get busy.
They make mistakes, they learn, they try again.
They fall down, they get up again as often as it takes to get the job done. They simplify; they don't overcomplicate.
They have a unique way of looking at things, and attacking a task.
They FOCUS on what needs to be done, eliminate distraction.
They understand that small tasks can lead to big results.
They find what works and stick to it.
They have a patience many of us just can't fathom.
Failure is not an option.
I had the honour of playing a round of golf with a Professional Golfer last week. This guy was good and had won numerous tournaments. I asked him how he got to be such a good golfer and this is what he told me. He said, "I've played golf since I was 4. I'm 24 now. I've played golf pretty much every day my entire life." I then said to him, "so you did the same thing everyday and got really good at it?" He looked at me for a moment to make sure that I was being serious about something so obvious then he said. "Yes, I got some lessons and instructions then practised every day and here I am."
So if I can draw from that, if you want to be good at something - successful at something - do it everyday - over and over and over again!
Could it be that simple?
Building your online business is as simple as Copy. Paste. Promote. Repeat. Everyday?
