Author's program note. Today is Saturday, November 12, 2011. And Americans with well-worn pennants and blissful memories of picture perfect days like this when they were young and gleeful will today gather at gridirons around the nation... there to participate in the great rite of football. If they are lucky, alma mater will have a fight song as great as the one that ignites the crowd at Penn State... which causes even the most ancient and arthritic to jump up... and remember. when they were young, boundless in their hopes and expectations; loyal to God, country, college, and... the team.
We all know that feeling and we just cannot get enough of it. Thus, to put yourself in the mood, go to any search engine and find that fight song -- "The Nittany Lion" -- one of the best -- then turn the sound up and play it... "But of all the honored idols. There's but one that stands the test. It's the stately Nittany Lion. The symbol of our best..."
Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in the history of the Great Republic.
Until just a few days ago when the shocking, sordid facts of the scandal broke upon a first disbelieving nation, Joe Paterno, head coach at fortunate Penn State, was moving towards the end of his career wafted by the incense of millions of people around the nation... who venerated the man, his vision, what he stood for, and not least of all the golden touch that turned Penn State from a mere college town, to a site of pilgrimage for the faithful. It was heady stuff, as close to perfection as mortals ever know. All that was needed to complete the scene was the explosion of affection at his last home game... and a trip to the White House to receive the nation's highest honor, the Medal of Freedom, from the hands of the President of the United States, an event eagerly promoted by Pennsylvania's two United States senators, star struck like all the rest. A great American story was about to be concluded to the satisfaction of all.
But as any student of classics could tell you, this isn't how Fate works... as JoePa knew, for he was an unlikely student of the Roman poet Virgil and the "Aeneid" he read often in the original Latin. JoePa knew Nemesis, the goddess of retributive justice. And it was Nemesis who came to preside over his final sickening days at Penn State... which he left as pariah, not patriarch. And so a dazzling 46-year career came to an end with breath taking speed, obloquy, disgust, contempt, anger... and sadness.
What had happened, what had gone so terribly wrong? Here are the facts:
On November 5, 2011, former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested on 40 counts relating to sexual abuse of eight young boys over a 15-year period, including alleged incidents that occurred at Penn State. A 2011 grand jury investigation reported that Mike McQueary, a graduate assistant, told Paterno in 2002 that he had seen Sandusky performing a sex act on a 10-year-old boy in Penn State's shower facilities. According to the report, Paterno notified Athletic Director Tim Curley the next day about the incident.
Here's where JoePa's storied career begins to unravel, for it is here that he decided to act for the good of his team, his "program", not the good of the victims and of the institution which hired him and provided every element for a supremely comfortable life.
Yes, this is the damning fact: Joseph Paterno knew... Joseph Paterno, fearful that his beloved program would be besmirched, decided to wink at the problem, hoping it would go away, rather than take the necessary action... which meant staying with it until it was well and truly solved.
JoePa had the responsibility to act... the need to act... the moral imperative to act... but he did next to nothing, thus showing clearly that here was a man who could prattle of leadership, of responsibility, of honor... but they were nothing but self-serving words... that when these traits were needed, JoePa had none of them.
And neither did anyone else at Penn State, where "honor" was a word in a rousing song... not the foundation for an institution of higher learning, humanity, and right.
The scandal is not that reprehensible acts were committed on the bodies of young boy who, all unknowing, maddened Sandusky and caused him to take terrible risks and do terrible deeds. That is not the scandal... that is a tragedy, frequent enough, a tragedy that everyone at Penn State, or wherever it occurs, can deal with, promptly and relatively easily IF the will and desire to deal with it be present.
The scandal is that Paterno, and the entire establishment at Penn State who knew the facts (and there were many such) chose not to act, thereby degrading themselves and their offices of honor, thereby giving the students, their charges, the worst possible example. And this lead to one of the most alarming incidents in the matter: the riot of Penn State students November 10 when they heard the news that Paterno had been removed by the Trustees of the university, they took to the street, not to remember and support the victims, but to support... JoePa. In short, they came down firmly, resolutely and violently on the wrong side, the side where there was no honor and no humanity. And these some of the brightest students in the land, the most privileged, the most likely to succeed. Their choice, their actions, their lack of vision were telling. How had a great institution fallen so low that its students could be so wrong in their selection?
Winning is not everything, and never was.
The cause of this great problem has been obvious for years to all who had eyes to see. The administrators of great educational institutions, the pride of a great nation, have allowed their progressive, humane principles to be insulted, demeaned, devalued. Once the greatest and most significant parts of these institutions, the liberal arts have been steadily slashed by the people who made JoePa a god, people who made winning, merely a thing, into everything, the thing that humbles all else.
But this is wrong and has always been wrong.
Teaching students to be good citizens is more valuable than winning games, no matter that they are won in profusion and record number.
Teaching students about the values and responsibilities of the well lived life is more important than wearing some token of a victory that they did nothing to help achieve.
Working to transform a distressed planet in a myriad of ways, this is far more important -- and necessary -- than supporting, in any way, a squad of those manifesting every kind of anti-social behavior.
And no one exceeded Paterno in finding such people and using them for his ends.
And so Paterno allowed Sandusky, despite his detailed knowledge of this man and his mayhem, to keep a college title, an office and easy access to his prey, despite his 1999 dismissal. It was, he thought, good for his "program," his team, his power and control. So, too, the fact that from 2002-2008 46 of his players were arrested and charged with 163 counts; 27 of t hem were eventually convicted or pleaded guilty to a combined 45 counts.
Through all this the Nittany Lion was diminished, its shibboleths hollow, in the hands of the unworthy, majestic no longer. Now, therefore, must Penn State, bolstered by courageous and energetic leaders seize this opportunity to restructure itself, to become in fact, not merely in name, a great institution of humane values. This is your moment, people of Penn State and all others similarly situated. Seize it. For you who have lost your soul and direction, must take this opportunity to find them. "Fight for her honor, Fight, and Victory again."

How to Create Blog Titles that DEMAND attention!

If you are going to spend the time it requires to blog then you want to make certain your time is for the maximum return.
You want readers right? You want your blog to be shared in social media right? You want more traffic so you earn more money right?
Smart bloggers who earn considerable revenue from their blogs, know it's critical to have well-thought blog titles.
Here I share some critical points about writing blog titles so you get noticed among the millions of blogs out there.
For effective blog titles do this:
A great blog title gets the readers attention then draws them in so they actually read your blog. Remember, some web sites, readers and devices like cell phones and iPad aps, show only the title of your blog. Your introduction or summary of what the blog is about may not even appear so your title better be instantly eye-popping and interesting. If readers see only your title, and your title is lame, you are less likely to get readership. Instead make your title catchy, one that immediately conveys what the blog is about so readers think you are click-worthy. Be sure that your title is not word-heavy but is clear and obvious. Readers what to know right away what you have to offer and if its worthy of their precious time to read. When you read my examples below you will get a better understanding of what goes into a Blog Title that DEMANDS readership.
Creating blog titles that will get indexed by search engines, and read by people.
When creating your titles you want to use as many key words related to your blog content as you can. Before you even start your blog post, think about who you want to read this post and what key words are relevant to your purposes and to your audience. If your blog is targeting a specific audience, try to work that into the title so your title speaks and says to the individual - HEY READ ME! If you want people to read your blog who are looking for specific key words related to what you offer, work those key words into the title.
Consider that people are busy, often they prefer short, easy to read blog posts. Ensure if you can that your blog title relays this by summarizing what you blog includes.
Don't compromise the value of your key words by being too creative in your title, make sure they are included in your title. With Google recently announcing that fresh content contributes to higher page ranking, you want to make sure if your blog is about a trending topic, a news event, or breaking news, that it gets scanned first. You can help this happen by integrating the most obvious key words in your title so your blog gets scanned by Google and other search engine bots.
Finally, an important reason to give some thought to use of key words within your Blog title is this. If you have any type of monetization on your blog, such as Google's Ad Sense, the key words you use will trigger specific related topic ads to appear on your site. This is beneficial to you, as ads that appear on your blog are more closely matched to your Ad Sense ads which offers you somewhat of an advantage for potential earning through clicks on the ads that appear on your blog.
Convey what your Blog is about with a smart title.
In your Blog title, say exactly what your content is in an enticing way. If you can find a clever way to shock, or make someone take notice within your Blog title, do so. For example, offer 7 Tips, or 10 Strategies, or 10 Ways to Drop 10 Pounds. This style of titling is a good way to convey that your blog is brief but includes valuable information. For some blog titles you may find it helpful to convey a sense of urgency so readers gets the feeling they will miss out on some really good, juicy or helpful information if they don't read it. Celebrity gossip and Hollywood bloggers are particularly good at dangling carrots (celebrity names with a hint of scandal) within their blog titles to attract readership.
You may be thinking to yourself, WHOA! She is asking for a lot to be incorporated into a simple blog title! Yes, I am but it is easy if you know how to do it, you will get better at it as you go and your results will reward and motivate you. It's for your own good - really. To help you get started, I've included 6 examples of effective and less effective blog titles below.

If you are going to spend the time it requires to blog then you want to make certain your time is for the maximum return.
You want readers right? You want your blog to be shared in social media right? You want more traffic so you earn more money right?
Smart bloggers who earn considerable revenue from their blogs, know it's critical to have well-thought blog titles.
Here I share some critical points about writing blog titles so you get noticed among the millions of blogs out there.
For effective blog titles do this:
A great blog title gets the readers attention then draws them in so they actually read your blog. Remember, some web sites, readers and devices like cell phones and iPad aps, show only the title of your blog. Your introduction or summary of what the blog is about may not even appear so your title better be instantly eye-popping and interesting. If readers see only your title, and your title is lame, you are less likely to get readership. Instead make your title catchy, one that immediately conveys what the blog is about so readers think you are click-worthy. Be sure that your title is not word-heavy but is clear and obvious. Readers what to know right away what you have to offer and if its worthy of their precious time to read. When you read my examples below you will get a better understanding of what goes into a Blog Title that DEMANDS readership.
Creating blog titles that will get indexed by search engines, and read by people.
When creating your titles you want to use as many key words related to your blog content as you can. Before you even start your blog post, think about who you want to read this post and what key words are relevant to your purposes and to your audience. If your blog is targeting a specific audience, try to work that into the title so your title speaks and says to the individual - HEY READ ME! If you want people to read your blog who are looking for specific key words related to what you offer, work those key words into the title.
Consider that people are busy, often they prefer short, easy to read blog posts. Ensure if you can that your blog title relays this by summarizing what you blog includes.
Don't compromise the value of your key words by being too creative in your title, make sure they are included in your title. With Google recently announcing that fresh content contributes to higher page ranking, you want to make sure if your blog is about a trending topic, a news event, or breaking news, that it gets scanned first. You can help this happen by integrating the most obvious key words in your title so your blog gets scanned by Google and other search engine bots.
Finally, an important reason to give some thought to use of key words within your Blog title is this. If you have any type of monetization on your blog, such as Google's Ad Sense, the key words you use will trigger specific related topic ads to appear on your site. This is beneficial to you, as ads that appear on your blog are more closely matched to your Ad Sense ads which offers you somewhat of an advantage for potential earning through clicks on the ads that appear on your blog.
Convey what your Blog is about with a smart title.
In your Blog title, say exactly what your content is in an enticing way. If you can find a clever way to shock, or make someone take notice within your Blog title, do so. For example, offer 7 Tips, or 10 Strategies, or 10 Ways to Drop 10 Pounds. This style of titling is a good way to convey that your blog is brief but includes valuable information. For some blog titles you may find it helpful to convey a sense of urgency so readers gets the feeling they will miss out on some really good, juicy or helpful information if they don't read it. Celebrity gossip and Hollywood bloggers are particularly good at dangling carrots (celebrity names with a hint of scandal) within their blog titles to attract readership.
You may be thinking to yourself, WHOA! She is asking for a lot to be incorporated into a simple blog title! Yes, I am but it is easy if you know how to do it, you will get better at it as you go and your results will reward and motivate you. It's for your own good - really. To help you get started, I've included 6 examples of effective and less effective blog titles below.

Weak: How to grow roses.

Strong: 7 Sure-Fire Ways to get rid of allergies for good!
Weak: Allergies: a problem experienced by 30% of Americans

Google has been looking for ways to compete with Facebook and others in the social media realm while still appealing to business customers.
This week, Google released Google+ Business Pages.
Google+ shares some similarities with the other social media main players (FaceBook, LinkedIn, Twitter) but has unique value of it's own.
With 40 million and growing users you want to make sure your business is well represented with quality, key word rich content that you control and publish. It's not a good idea to ignore the giant, so get your Google+ Business page and start making it work for your business. Google is integrating the +1 system currently in use for search results into the Google + pages as well.
Here's what you need to do to get a Google + Business Pages, then use it to generate interest, traffic and leads for your business.
1. To get your Google+ Business page you will need to set up a free account.
Sign into your Google+ Profile, click on "create a Google+ page". You then pick the category of the page you are creating, and click create. The categories included are: Product/Brand; Company/Institution/Organization, Local business/place; Arts/Entertainment/Sports or Other. According to Google , don't fuss if your business does not fit closely with the categories, they suggest just picking OTHER. Google clarified that at this time only the LOCAL Business listings are handled differently as they include a location map, contact and hours for your business. It's easy and fast to set up.
2. Once you have your Google+ Business Page do this.
a) Post photos! Google likes to index images, and they are hungry for new content. Create a public face for your company by posting pictures that best represent your company, products and services. Don't limit yourself to a picture of your building, or founders, include graphs, mission statement, awards and more. Once your photos are loaded it is easy to share them.
b) Promote! Expand the reach and audience for your Google+ Business page by promoting it to your blog, LinkedIn, Face Book, Twitter and your other social media accounts.
c) Share! Capitalize on the fact that others using Google+ also have circles that connect them to others. Encourage people to share your content with others in their circles for more exposure.
d) Analyze! As smart marketers know, it is not enough to promote, you want to know where you are getting traffic. Google+ provides you with a clever tool for analyzing your traffic and leads generated from Google+
e) Backlinks! Now, here is the part where you really want to pay attention. In your Google+ Business page, you have the option of adding recommended links. You will find this under the ABOUT TAB. This is where you are going to want to include links to your hottest offers to generate leads, traffic and sales!
Finally, if you have a Google Ad Words account you can link it to your Google+ Business page.

Google has announced changes to their search algorithms so that more relevant and up to date results appear first.
Google uses 200+ methods to rank pages, and this recent announcement regarding fresh content has HUGE implications for webmasters and marketers.
Says Google: "We completed our Caffeine web indexing system last year, which allows us to crawl and index the web for fresh content quickly on an enormous scale. Building upon the momentum from Caffeine, today we’re making a significant improvement to our ranking algorithm that impacts roughly 35 percent of searches and better determines when to give you more up-to-date relevant results for these varying degrees of freshness." Google went on to add this, "Frequent updates are critically important. There are also searches for information that changes often, but isn't really a hot topic or a recurring event. For example, if you’re researching the a specific product, or you’re in the market for a new car and want reviews of a specific car, you probably want the most up to date information."
So here is what you need to understand from this announcement to improve your website ranking and ideally increase your sales.
1. If you don't have a blog, start one NOW.
2. Blog or post articles about recent events or hot topics that are trending to give yourself an advantage
3. Blog or post fresh new content to your site DAILY if you can, frequent updates is paramount.
4. Blog about topics or events with YOUR own key words embedded in the content.
5. Up-to-date review sites about products that have rich quality content with key words gives you an advantage in ranking.
Google is essentially telling you what their indexers and bots look for when ranking web pages. Listen to what they are telling you, take this information and start blogging, not once a month, but daily if you can. Make sure your blog is monetized to maximize your opportunities for profit and lead generation.

What the Herman Cain scandal is really all about... and why it's bad news for the GOP.

Author's program note. I'm Illinois-born and bred, and that's why I'm tickled pink by the latest developments in the political education of pizza man Herman Cain. I mean, we loyal Illini were beginning to pine for another good scandal. We haven't had one, you see, since ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted in August, 2009 on 17 counts, including the really bright idea of trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by some guy named Obama who got a promotion and immediately moved out of the old neighborhood.
Anyway, we're so used to red meat in the Loop and what we call Chicagoland that a piece of ham-fisted political skullduggery doesn't begin to satisfy us to the extent that it would with, say, the rubes of Des Moines.
So, we're all just pleased as punch at the advent of Sharon Bialek, a Chicago woman you didn't know about a couple of days ago... a woman you will call "what's her name?" just a few days from now. But she's got news value right this minute... and I say, "Hurrah!" since all the political junkies in bars around the Land of Lincoln were beginning to lament the scandal-free landscape. But they are sure happy now.
Here are the facts:
Herman Cain is a guy who woke up one morning with a well-known American bee in his bonnet: he decided he was the White Hope of the nation, a Man of Destiny, ready to be outfitted for his place on Mt. Rushmore. Never mind that the man, a titan amongst pizza makers, had never had to make a decision more weighty than whether his pizzas should include anchovies, or not; Herman knew he was exactly what ailing Uncle Sam needed. And so he wrote a book (mandatory for all presidential candidates) to make his case to the nation and so started his gaffe-filled quest, a quest that made Don Quixiote de la Mancha and his Impossible Dream look as grounded as money in the bank..
For instance, on the matter of China and our need to worry, candidate Cain warned us of our jeopardy should the Red menace ever get The Bomb. It was promptly pointed out to the defiant "What me worry?" candidate that China became a nuclear power 47 years ago. But who needs facts when you are a master in the selection and positioning of pepperoni, which impacts us all and every palate. That's real power.
Herman Cain, a man who could partee!
I'm guessing from the censorious commentary in publications online and off that these guys don't understand the hospitality industry in which Cain cut such an expansive, larger-than-life figure. But I do know this industry where enough is too little and satisfying every little whim is their credo and pride. In short these boys and girls knew how to have a real good time.
Too much rich food, way too much booze, too much conversation that skated perilously close to the unacceptable and unprofessional (and often went beyond)... too much skin showing, too suggestive by half, and nary a spouse to be seen. They were at home like Mrs. Herman Cain, wife of 43 years, teacher, librarian, mother of two, grandmother of three, and completely invisible while her back-slapping, late playing, grand-standing hubby fights for his political life. The dutiful spouse who used to stand by her man... now lets "till death do us party" swing in the wind while she makes other plans. Nice.
You can picture the scene; it goes like this. "Hi, I'm Herman Cain." "Nice to meet you, Mr. Cain." "Call me Herman." And so the primordial dance of man and woman, big- wig and small fry, promotion giver and promotion seeker begins and progresses, all fueled by a ton of gratuities in the hospitality suite, overseen by one of those eye- popping ice sculptures, now melting from swan to ugly duckling.
In this business cum pleasure environment, Herman Cain, master of innuendo and the can't be complained about hug and kiss, ruled. And he got away with every questionable action... even to the extent of dishing out tidy sums to ease forgetfulness amongst the ladies who rebuffed him and needed to be removed from sight and mind. Had he never run for president of the United States no one would have cared about these ancient gropes and grinds from the libidinous 'nineties.
But not only did he run... he ran without first examining his life and actions.. .to be sure he was like Caesar's wife far above and far beyond any reproach whatsoever. He owed this scrutiny to the supporters who flocked to the hokum of his "9-9-9" message until all hell broke loose and his campaign needed "911" not "9-9-9."
And when it did, he stood before the world as naked and confused as the Emperor who had no clothes... exposing both himself and the party which made him its "front runner" to the most vulgar of jokes and erudite speculation on how a man of so little knowledge, absolutely no demonstrated political successes and no ability whatsoever to deal with this crisis had the unmitigated gall to stand before the citizens asking for the greatest gift of all.
The culprits of course are not the 4 women who say Cain made grossly improper suggestions. They are but the proximate cause of the current imbroglio. They will all come forth, all 4 of them, as Sharon Bialek already has, and they will tell their squalid little stories to a nation which cares nothing for them or their "courage" in making their claims. They are only insignificant pawns in the far bigger story; of why Cain, with so little to recommend him to a great nation, should still be politically kicking at all, for that is the true surprise.
Cain, of course, has only himself to blame for this debacle for which he blames himself not one iota. He is innocent, the victim of a witch hunt; he is misunderstood, he is white as snow, he is the victim, the greatest victim ever; he categorically rejects anything that is detrimental to his ludicrous candidacy. And so he goes on, day by day, hoping Adolph Hitler was right, that if you say a thing often enough the people will come to see it as the unvarnished and total truth. And so he stonewalls, never understanding that by so doing he fuels the media's desire and determination to discover all... and so make the pizza maker eat dirt.
In the end the ladies will have their moment of fame and they will say enough so detrimental that Cain will drop out as his support and finances tumble.
Why has this happened?
And now we come to a blunt assessment of why this is all so bad for the GOP. The man who should be the beneficiary of Cain's pratfalls and misjudgments, Mitt Romney, is in fact the problem, not the solution. He issues white papers; he offers numbers and plans, but the people see him as a man with statistics but no heart; a man it is virtually impossible to like... and they do not wish to follow such a man.
Cain exists now for one reason, because his supporters cannot abide the unpalatable Romney and are not sure what to do now that their unlikely paladin hangs by a thread. Any of the accusing women, with a plausible story and good presentation, can cut this thread... making Mitt more likely as the nominee but no more likely as the man to lead America forward. And this is the great dilemma of the GOP, once a great engine in the triumph of the nation, now in search of someone to lead us to greatness again.

It was promptly pointed out to the defiant "What me worry?" candidate that China became a nuclear power 47 years ago. But who needs facts when you are a master in the selection and positioning of pepperoni, which impacts us all and every palate. That's real power.
Herman Cain, a man who could partee!
I'm guessing from the censorious commentary in publications online and off that these guys don't understand the hospitality industry in which Cain cut such an expansive, larger-than-life figure. But I do know this industry where enough is too little and satisfying every little whim is their credo and pride. In short these boys and girls knew how to have a real good time.
Too much rich food, way too much booze, too much conversation that skated perilously close to the unacceptable and unprofessional (and often went beyond)... too much skin showing, too suggestive by half, and nary a spouse to be seen. They were at home like Mrs. Herman Cain, wife of 43 years, teacher, librarian, mother of two, grandmother of three, and completely invisible while her back-slapping, late playing, grand-standing hubby fights for his political life. The dutiful spouse who used to stand by her man... now lets "till death do us party" swing in the wind while she makes other plans. Nice.
You can picture the scene; it goes like this. "Hi, I'm Herman Cain." "Nice to meet you, Mr. Cain." "Call me Herman." And so the primordial dance of man and woman, big- wig and small fry, promotion giver and promotion seeker begins and progresses, all fueled by a ton of gratuities in the hospitality suite, overseen by one of those eye- popping ice sculptures, now melting from swan to ugly duckling.
In this business cum pleasure environment, Herman Cain, master of innuendo and the can't be complained about hug and kiss, ruled. And he got away with every questionable action... even to the extent of dishing out tidy sums to ease forgetfulness amongst the ladies who rebuffed him and needed to be removed from sight and mind. Had he never run for president of the United States no one would have cared about these ancient gropes and grinds from the libidinous 'nineties.
But not only did he run... he ran without first examining his life and actions.. .to be sure he was like Caesar's wife far above and far beyond any reproach whatsoever. He owed this scrutiny to the supporters who flocked to the hokum of his "9-9-9" message until all hell broke loose and his campaign needed "911" not "9-9-9."
And when it did, he stood before the world as naked and confused as the Emperor who had no clothes... exposing both himself and the party which made him its "front runner" to the most vulgar of jokes and erudite speculation on how a man of so little knowledge, absolutely no demonstrated political successes and no ability whatsoever to deal with this crisis had the unmitigated gall to stand before the citizens asking for the greatest gift of all.
The culprits of course are not the 4 women who say Cain made grossly improper suggestions. They are but the proximate cause of the current imbroglio. They will all come forth, all 4 of them, as Sharon Bialek already has, and they will tell their squalid little stories to a nation which cares nothing for them or their "courage" in making their claims. They are only insignificant pawns in the far bigger story; of why Cain, with so little to recommend him to a great nation, should still be politically kicking at all, for that is the true surprise.
Cain, of course, has only himself to blame for this debacle for which he blames himself not one iota. He is innocent, the victim of a witch hunt; he is misunderstood, he is white as snow, he is the victim, the greatest victim ever; he categorically rejects anything that is detrimental to his ludicrous candidacy. And so he goes on, day by day, hoping Adolph Hitler was right, that if you say a thing often enough the people will come to see it as the unvarnished and total truth. And so he stonewalls, never understanding that by so doing he fuels the media's desire and determination to discover all... and so make the pizza maker eat dirt.
In the end the ladies will have their moment of fame and they will say enough so detrimental that Cain will drop out as his support and finances tumble.
Why has this happened?
And now we come to a blunt assessment of why this is all so bad for the GOP. The man who should be the beneficiary of Cain's pratfalls and misjudgments, Mitt Romney, is in fact the problem, not the solution. He issues white papers; he offers numbers and plans, but the people see him as a man with statistics but no heart; a man it is virtually impossible to like... and they do not wish to follow such a man.
Cain exists now for one reason, because his supporters cannot abide the unpalatable Romney and are not sure what to do now that their unlikely paladin hangs by a thread. Any of the accusing women, with a plausible story and good presentation, can cut this thread... making Mitt more likely as the nominee but no more likely as the man to lead America forward. And this is the great dilemma of the GOP, once a great engine in the triumph of the nation, now in search of someone to lead us to greatness again.

Author's program note. So, at last it came, after a thousand long years, then as swift as lightning... girl royals are now equals of boy royals, by parliamentary fiat and the Queen's own signature . And all the Founding Mothers of Women's Rights and Feminism are cock-a-hoop, equality in all occupations -- even the most august -- having always been their goal.
For such an epochal event, there must be music, bright, uplifting, girlish music, and so I have selected that curvaceous tune "I enjoy being a girl" from Rodger and Hammerstein's hit "Flower Drum Song" (1958). The only person who may be unhappy hearing it will be the first affected British prince... and he isn't even born yet.
Now thanks to the omniscient information services provided exclusively to only the best of commentators (ahem!), I am about to reveal to you the transcript of the critical interview between HM The Queen, HRH The Prince Charles The Prince of Wales; HRH The Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh, and Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Windsor Castle on a day not too long ago:
The Queen: "Well, what we've always expected has at last been proposed. The Prime Minister has advised and the Cabinet has approved that princesses should now be the equal of princes in all matters, including The Succession. I have called this meeting of The Firm to discuss our options."
Prince Charles: "Queen Victoria would not have been amused, ma'am."
The Queen: "Or Queen Mary either."
Duke of Cambridge: "But we must move with the times, dear grandmama."
And upon hearing this the Queen gave an audible sigh... speaking thus with weariness and resignation:
"Every one of my Prime Ministers, starting with my first, dear Winnie, has been so advising me for 60 years now... and where has it gotten the Windsors... or the nation?"
" 'Give up the Empire, Your Majesty,' they said, "And so, being only a young girl, though a sovereign queen, I did."
" 'Give up the right to veto legislation.' And, being a constitutional monarch I did, thereby affixing my signature while holding my nose to even the most daft and ludicrous ideas."
" 'Make such and such a one a baron...such and such a one an earl... and distribute knighthoods to all and sundry'; and I did this, too, giving honors to those completely without scruples, much less honor... and I felt queenship to be a deception... yet I did all this and more for the dwindling cause of royalty."
"Yes, I did all this, and much more."
"I was advised to give up the Royal car on the railroads... to give up the Royal yacht which made such a grand impression on politicians and especially their star-struck wives... then I gave up the Royal plane... and slashed the number of carriages... and the footmen and, and, and..."
And here Majesty took a moment to brace herself.
"And now I hear, dear Charles, that you wish to pull down Buckingham Palace and turn it into luxury flats. Can this, too, be true?"...
Prince Charles: "You have often called it a white elephant yourself, dear mama."
The Queen rises, and speaks not so much to the living princes before her but to her princely predecessors, the Plantagenets, the Stuarts, the Hanoverians, the latter day princes of Saxe-Coburg and, as last, her relatives of Windsor... and suddenly there is profound silence in this chamber hung with red brocade, gilded with gold, and graced by majesty.
"Have I kept faith with you, my ancestors... have I kept faith with you, England? Have I done what you wished... even when I thought better of it... have I stood before the nation at all times, in all seasons, in all situations, proud to be the queen of such a people and the worthy descendant of such princes as you were? Have I been a sovereign of nobility... of wisdom... of magnanimity... of grace... of cool reflection and of courage?"
And here she moved about the room, touching each picture with gentleness as if she were caressing a beloved relative, seen again with love, respect, and deep compassion.
There was no sound in the room... but each person in that room was touched to the very core of their being. For they were all, each of them, threads in the royal skein of England... and if they never knew it before, they truly knew it now.
Prince William, the white hope of the dynasty, graced with kindness and empathy, saw the Queen was tired now, leapt up to take her arm and kiss her cheek, for he was in himself a man of reconciliation and knew by instinct just when to move and what to do.
"We love you so, dear grandmama," and a tear came to them both.
And then Prince Philip jarred the atmosphere, as he had been doing for 60 years, "Oh, that's all very well, but what's to be done? This is no time to play the tragedy queen, you know." And so they got down to the business at hand, the business of managing the greatest constitutional monarchy on earth, giving up as little as possible, keeping as much, for this constant nibbling, they knew, would never stop.
Was the government determined on the matter? "Of course," said the Queen, "for Conservatives are always the most revolutionary."
Have all the 16 Commonwealth nations been consulted? "Yes, and already they have all signified their acceptance."
And what about the prohibition on a sovereign being Roman Catholic? "That will remain in place for now, not even the greatest levelers in the land are prepared to open this Pandora's box in the face of all the current scandals, sexual and otherwise, at the feet of the Bishop of Rome."
At last the details having been canvassed and thoroughly vetted, the discussion waned. All had had their say but one, HRH of Cambridge, once Kate Middleton. "Have you anything you wish to say, my dear? Perhaps you prefer to watch, having been one of us for such a short time?"
But Kate of Cambridge did have something to say, and she took her line from Portia in "The Merchant of Venice."
"Your Majesty, dear grandmama," she said...
"The quality of mercy is not strained..."
And the Queen knew the rest and thought the words in her mind as the duchess spoke them...
"It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute of awe and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy is above this sceptered sway; It is enthroned in the hearts of kings; It is an attribute of God himself, And earthly power doth then show like God's When mercy seasons justice."
Your Majesty achieved the crown not because you were the oldest but because you had no brother. Any brother, of whatever age, would have removed you from the succession and unjustly, too. With this act, you would have achieved the crown by right and equity. And consider this: no mother, not even a queen, should be forced because of the gender of a child to love a girl less than a boy. And therefore I urge you to see this bill as a matter of fairness and love, and of mercy for a mother, not of loss and diminution. It is not like giving up a plane or boat for this is a matter of fundamental right and profound human need. This is something we must do, not because we are forced, but because we believe that this is right, for us and for all people."
And the Queen knew she had heard more than truth from her grand daughter... she had heard the heart and the humanity of a queen. And so she, in recognition, ordered lavish Christmas revels at Windsor, in honor of Duchess Kate and her unborn child, girl or boy, Heir of England... all liberally done and paid for from the privy purse, without demur.

Now thanks to the omniscient information services provided exclusively to only the best of commentators (ahem!), I am about to reveal to you the transcript of the critical interview between HM The Queen, HRH The Prince Charles The Prince of Wales; HRH The Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh, and Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Windsor Castle on a day not too long ago:
The Queen: "Well, what we've always expected has at last been proposed. The Prime Minister has advised and the Cabinet has approved that princesses should now be the equal of princes in all matters, including The Succession. I have called this meeting of The Firm to discuss our options."
Prince Charles: "Queen Victoria would not have been amused, ma'am."
The Queen: "Or Queen Mary either."
Duke of Cambridge: "But we must move with the times, dear grandmama."
And upon hearing this the Queen gave an audible sigh... speaking thus with weariness and resignation:
"Every one of my Prime Ministers, starting with my first, dear Winnie, has been so advising me for 60 years now... and where has it gotten the Windsors... or the nation?"
" 'Give up the Empire, Your Majesty,' they said, "And so, being only a young girl, though a sovereign queen, I did."
" 'Give up the right to veto legislation.' And, being a constitutional monarch I did, thereby affixing my signature while holding my nose to even the most daft and ludicrous ideas."
" 'Make such and such a one a baron...such and such a one an earl... and distribute knighthoods to all and sundry'; and I did this, too, giving honors to those completely without scruples, much less honor... and I felt queenship to be a deception... yet I did all this and more for the dwindling cause of royalty."
"Yes, I did all this, and much more."
"I was advised to give up the Royal car on the railroads... to give up the Royal yacht which made such a grand impression on politicians and especially their star-struck wives... then I gave up the Royal plane... and slashed the number of carriages... and the footmen and, and, and..."
And here Majesty took a moment to brace herself.
"And now I hear, dear Charles, that you wish to pull down Buckingham Palace and turn it into luxury flats. Can this, too, be true?"...
Prince Charles: "You have often called it a white elephant yourself, dear mama."
The Queen rises, and speaks not so much to the living princes before her but to her princely predecessors, the Plantagenets, the Stuarts, the Hanoverians, the latter day princes of Saxe-Coburg and, as last, her relatives of Windsor... and suddenly there is profound silence in this chamber hung with red brocade, gilded with gold, and graced by majesty.
"Have I kept faith with you, my ancestors... have I kept faith with you, England? Have I done what you wished... even when I thought better of it... have I stood before the nation at all times, in all seasons, in all situations, proud to be the queen of such a people and the worthy descendant of such princes as you were? Have I been a sovereign of nobility... of wisdom... of magnanimity... of grace... of cool reflection and of courage?"
And here she moved about the room, touching each picture with gentleness as if she were caressing a beloved relative, seen again with love, respect, and deep compassion.
There was no sound in the room... but each person in that room was touched to the very core of their being. For they were all, each of them, threads in the royal skein of England... and if they never knew it before, they truly knew it now.
Prince William, the white hope of the dynasty, graced with kindness and empathy, saw the Queen was tired now, leapt up to take her arm and kiss her cheek, for he was in himself a man of reconciliation and knew by instinct just when to move and what to do.
"We love you so, dear grandmama," and a tear came to them both.
And then Prince Philip jarred the atmosphere, as he had been doing for 60 years, "Oh, that's all very well, but what's to be done? This is no time to play the tragedy queen, you know." And so they got down to the business at hand, the business of managing the greatest constitutional monarchy on earth, giving up as little as possible, keeping as much, for this constant nibbling, they knew, would never stop.
Was the government determined on the matter? "Of course," said the Queen, "for Conservatives are always the most revolutionary."
Have all the 16 Commonwealth nations been consulted? "Yes, and already they have all signified their acceptance."
And what about the prohibition on a sovereign being Roman Catholic? "That will remain in place for now, not even the greatest levelers in the land are prepared to open this Pandora's box in the face of all the current scandals, sexual and otherwise, at the feet of the Bishop of Rome."
At last the details having been canvassed and thoroughly vetted, the discussion waned. All had had their say but one, HRH of Cambridge, once Kate Middleton. "Have you anything you wish to say, my dear? Perhaps you prefer to watch, having been one of us for such a short time?"
But Kate of Cambridge did have something to say, and she took her line from Portia in "The Merchant of Venice."
"Your Majesty, dear grandmama," she said...
"The quality of mercy is not strained..."
And the Queen knew the rest and thought the words in her mind as the duchess spoke them...
"It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute of awe and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy is above this sceptered sway; It is enthroned in the hearts of kings; It is an attribute of God himself, And earthly power doth then show like God's When mercy seasons justice."
Your Majesty achieved the crown not because you were the oldest but because you had no brother. Any brother, of whatever age, would have removed you from the succession and unjustly, too. With this act, you would have achieved the crown by right and equity. And consider this: no mother, not even a queen, should be forced because of the gender of a child to love a girl less than a boy. And therefore I urge you to see this bill as a matter of fairness and love, and of mercy for a mother, not of loss and diminution. It is not like giving up a plane or boat for this is a matter of fundamental right and profound human need. This is something we must do, not because we are forced, but because we believe that this is right, for us and for all people."
And the Queen knew she had heard more than truth from her grand daughter... she had heard the heart and the humanity of a queen. And so she, in recognition, ordered lavish Christmas revels at Windsor, in honor of Duchess Kate and her unborn child, girl or boy, Heir of England... all liberally done and paid for from the privy purse, without demur.
