Runaway Spending: House Speaker John Boehner is calling in the fiscal Navy SEALs against Washington's reckless expenditures. If we can eliminate Osama bin Laden, we can eliminate trillions in federal extravagance, too.
'We should be talking about cuts of trillions, not just billions," Speaker Boehner declared in a speech to the Economic Club of New York on Monday, adding that "the cuts should be greater than the accompanying increase in debt authority the President is given."
During the two years of Democratic rule of both houses of Congress and the White House, Washington sank into complete fiscal irrationality as it spent about $7 trillion — virtually half the national debt. Boehner's unprecedented move — tying the amount of debt ceiling increase to the amount of spending cuts — is the kind of shock to the system President Obama and the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate need right now.
It will also help convince the tea party movement — not to mention an American people worried about our long-term economic survivability — that the Republican Party has abandoned its big-spending ways of the last decade.
Have Republicans really joined Spendaholics Anonymous? They'll need to be, because the president is taking them out to the bar.
The White House has once again lured GOP lawmakers to "talks" at its infamous lair: Blair House, where 14 months ago ObamaCare was snatched from the jaws of defeat. House Republicans should ask themselves if accepting the invitation to return to the same spider web they got caught in last year is a good idea.
The ceiling the U.S. government is about to hit is $14.3 trillion, and it comes at a time when unemployment remains intolerably high at 9%. The private sector is not recovering the way it ordinarily would after a severe downturn, and anyone paying attention is disturbed.
This is a time crying out for the kind of leadership Boehner is offering as he demands trillions rather than mere billions.
Democrats have been savaging House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., because he won't kick the entitlement reform can down the road once again, and spineless Senate Republicans are disgracefully siding against Ryan on saving Medicare from bankruptcy.
But the American people know steadfast principle when they see it. As long as Speaker Boehner and his majority in the House of Representatives stick to the idea that now's the time to reverse Nancy Pelosi's spending spree, they will win the war of public opinion.
Liberal Democrats have made it clear that they don't want even "the rich," whom they're so fond of taxing to death, to pay their own Medicare premiums (see more here). That's how protective they are of that most massive and uncontainable of government programs.
This is a time to call in the special forces and launch a surgical strike against a foe that, in its way, is as dangerous to the American people as al-Qaida: liberal politicians in control of the public purse.
